Immersion, Identity & Inquiry: Supporting Arabic Language Development Through Curiosity-Driven Environments in EYFS – Fiona McDermott

This session explores how child-led, curiosity-driven early years environments can support Arabic language immersion. Drawing on recent school-based research into language development for multilingual learners in FS1 and FS2, we’ll examine how natural, play-based approaches can strengthen confidence, communication, and cultural connection for young Arabic learners.

Rather than relying solely on formal instruction, children learn best when they are emotionally secure, socially engaged, and encouraged to follow their natural curiosity. We will explore the impact of warm, home-like environments, the power of child-led play, and the critical role of adults in modelling and responding to language use. Practical strategies will be shared for embedding Arabic meaningfully into the daily rhythm of EYFS classrooms – from storytelling and morning routines to provocations and small-world play.
